FUN FOR THE FAMILY DAY IS SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012
There is no registration fee for Family Day this year; the events will occur at various locations. Events at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History will be FREE for kids; a $3 fee per adult will be charged for adults entering the Museum. The kayak tour will meet at Sub Sea Tours, 699 Embarcadero, with a $10 per person kayak rental fee paid directly to Sub Sea Tours. A small fee to cover "materials" will be charged for the Bird, Learn, Make and Take activities, which will be held at the Morro Bay Community Center. The Meet the Raptors shows are held at the Veteran's Hall.
All ages are welcome unless noted with an asterisk (*) in the schedule. Family groups must include at least one adult; each child 5 years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult on all events and field trips.
Field trips go weather permitting. Substitute activities will be available in case of inclement weather.
9:30-10:30 am Museum of Natural History Field Trip
Introduction to Birding and Habitat, a hike, with Stephanie Little, Jen Moonjian, and Chuck Mills. Learn to use binoculars and field guides and discuss habitat needs during a short walk from the Museum.
9:30-10:30 am Museum of Natural History Field Trip
Learn to Track, with Dave Berry. Learn to identify "who" made the track left behind.
10:30-ll:30 am Museum of Natural History Activity
Rubbing Noses with Reptiles, with Dennis Sheridan. Up close and hands-on experiences with reptiles (limit: 12 kids).
10:30-noon Embarcadero Field Trip
Kayaking in the Bay with Matt and Kimi Paradis. Paddle around the bay in search of birds and other wildlife. Participants under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult. There is a $10 charge per person for kayak rental.
11:00 am-2:00 pm Community Center Activity
Bird, Learn, Make and Take with Sue Shields, Cara O'Brien, Stephanie Little, and Jen Moojian. Stop in any time during the three hours and make arts and crafts with bird-related themes for a real "hands-on" experience. There will be a small charge at the door to cover materials.

Picnic lunch and recess. Bring your own lunch or eat out in town.
12:30-1:00 pm Museum of Natural History Presentation
Puppet Show with Linda Winters. Relax and enjoy this "all ages" show featuring Great Blue Herons.
1:00-2:00 pm Museum of Natural History Activity
Bird for a Day with State Park Docents Jerry Kirkhart, Chuck Mills and Karen Watts. Acquire a bird name for this 3-part program about bird history, IDs, mouth parts, colors and feathers.
1:00-2:00 pm Museum of Natural History Field Trip*
Critter Crawl with Chuck Woodard. Crawl, creep, or slither along searching for bugs, insects, spiders, reptiles (and maybe some birds) around the State Park grounds. *Participants need to be at least 7 years old.
1:00 & 2:30 pm Vet's Hall Presentation
Pacific Wildlife Care--Meet the Raptors. Meet several birds of prey, including a Great Horned Owl, American Kestrel, Red-Tailed Hawk, Merlin, and a Peregrine Falcon and possibly Mr. Handsome, a Turkey Vulture. These birds are educational ambassadors for Pacific Wildlife Care, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation center in Morro Bay. During this presentation by Kathy Duncan and Jeri Roberts you will learn about the wonderful world of raptors and their important niche in the environment. Bring cameras and questions for this up-close study of birds with binocular vision and sharp talons. General public event. Free for Festival attendees; $2 donation to PWC suggested for general public.
