Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival

Home » FAQs

How do I know the cost of an event? The cost of registration is listed at the top of the Schedule page on the website, and any added costs for van and boat trips are listed in the code section of the schedule or at the end of the descriptions.

Can I pay for just one day?  Yes, you may purchase a one-day pass for any of the days.

How do I check my schedule?  Follow the link at the bottom of your confirmation or update notice.

Can I volunteer and have my fees waived?   We have a limited number of volunteers for each festival.  Send your name to our email address and it will be forwarded to the Volunteer chair.  This is no guarantee that you have volunteer status, only that you are added to our volunteer list.

I lost my confirmation/schedule--what do I do?  You will be given a new copy in your packet at checkin.

Does everyone have to pay? For evening events? Children under the age of 12 have their registration fee waived, but must pay for van and boat trips.  The fees are all  listed on About the Events page and on the Schedule.  Evening programs are sometimes available for a $10 fee, if space is available.

Is there a deadline for registration?  For cancellation?  The deadlines for online and email registration and for cancellations are stated on the website and on the brochure. We do accept walk-in registrations when the Festival begins.

Do I really need to register for the Opening Reception?  For evening events?  Yes, please register for those events at the same time you register for all your events.  We need the numbers; space is also limited for the evening events.

Can I go to just one evening event? Yes, if space is available and with the payment of a small fee, usually $10.

How do I know if my credit card is safe?  Your online payment is always handled in the most secure way.  When the registrar enters your credit card number to pay, it immediately disappears and no records of credit card numbers are retained.

How will I know if my registration is confirmed?  You will receive an automated confirmation, sent to the email address you specify in your registration.  Please type/spell carefully.

How do I know where I am on waitlist?  Registrar will let you know when you ask to be added to a particular event.  It is better to select a seccond choice; there are few cancellations.

When I cancel, how do I get a refund?  How much do I get back?  Contact the Registrar to cancel, and she will let you know the amount of refund, if any, since we do not refund for cancellations after the date stated on website, or for no-shows.  Refunds usually take several weeks to process.  Refund checks will be mailed to you, less the $25 administrative fee.

Can I add, change, cancel an event?  How?  Yes, if spaces are available you may change of add events.  The Registrar will do this for you, as well as handle cancellations.

How do I know if a trip is too difficult for me?  The trip-rating system is in About the Events, and at the end of each trip description, both on the Morro Bay Bird Festival site, and on our professional registration site.

Will the leader wait for me if I'm a little late?  When do the trips really leave?  No, trips leave at the appointed time.  We recommend that you arrive at the starting point early.

Is there a way to know which birds I might see?  Our website has lists of birds seen, arranged by year.  Go to Birds in the left column of the Home Page.

Can I just join a trip/workshop when I get there?  No, you need to check in if you are already registered, and you need to pay if you have not registered.   Roll is taken for all events.

Why don't you add more of the popular events so everyone can go?  We have wonderful trip leaders and workshop presenters, but are limited in the numbers of them available.  Many leaders have events on all days, and so are not able to do multiple trips of the same event.

What do I need to bring for kayaking? No special gear is required. Dress warmly and bring a jacket, preferably waterproof. We also recommend avoiding wearing blue jeans or sweat pants if possible. These can soak and hold any spray that gets in the boats. Lightweight quick drying pants are better. We also have waterproof fleece-lined lap blankets that we will distribute to all participants.

How should I dress for boating?  Dress in layers; weather can vary.

What if the weather is bad?  Trips go, unless the Coast Guard cancels the boat trips.  Leaders also have the discretion to cancel some trips if weather is extremely bad.  Any event canceled by us entitles you to a refund for that event.

How do I get to Morro Bay? There is air and train service to San Luis Obispo, about twelve miles from Morro Bay.  Car rentals are available at the airport.  Specific directions for driving are found on the website at About Morro Bay.

I won't have a car: how will I get around? Trip leaders usually are able to arrange ride-sharing for group participants.  We suggest a small donation to driver for gas.

Distances:  How far is it from my hotel to Community Center?  Almost all hotels are within a couple of miles from the Center, and many within one mile.  Morro Bay has a trolley system and a Ride-on system, but neither can be depended on for regular stops at Community Center.  We have no taxis.

Lodging and Restaurants:

Can you recommend a hotel/motel?  Are there bargains somewhere?  You will find links under About Morro Bay;  the hotels listed there offer discounts to Bird Festival participants.  Under Resources you will find a larger listing of hotels and restaurants under the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce link.
